The company is a vendor for a major healthcare provider (Name withheld to comply with client’s corporate policy.)

Implement Cerner-certified solution, reduce maintenance and IT support costs.

The Printronix T4M, a light industrial and commercial thermal bar code printer, is Cerner-certified for healthcare and offers the most cost-effective solution with noticeably higher print quality than the Datasouth and other bar code printers that were evaluated.

    • Improved ROI due to lower maintenance costs and longer product life
    • Highly readable bar codes & better print quality
    • Flexible support of multiple print languages to meet growing requirements
    • Ease of use

For the last 18 years, Royce Digital Systems Inc. ( has been a vendor for a major national health care consortium, which provides services for hospitals and medical groups across the United States. Royce is well versed in the unique printing needs of its health care customers. Sixty percent of the company’s core business stems from the health care channel including hospitals, medical centers and laboratories. Over the years, this institution has continued to look to Royce Digital to deploy IT equipment solutions and maintenance that meet their changing needs.

As the national footprint continued to grow for this major healthcare client, a set of uniform standards for its printing infrastructure were implemented in order to become compliant with Cerner Certified Healthcare IT-approved products. When the time came for Royce Digital’s customer to open its newest state-of-the-art 27-acre campus, with two medical office buildings and a 262-bed hospital, the company recommended the Printronix T4M thermal bar code printer. To ensure the Cerner Certification requirements were met, Printronix’s Customer Application Engineering Team developed custom firmware delivering the flexibility and efficiency required for multiple work environments. The Printronix printers will be placed in central patient admissions and used to print three different types of patient wrist bands, each containing 128C and data matrix bar codes, for patient identification and to house their personal medical history critical for administering medication.

The balance of the 200 Printronix T4M printers will be used in the laboratories to produce documentation such as vial descriptions and imaging sleeves. The key attributes that drove the decision for this major institution to choose Printronix over the Datasouth brand were the printers’ reliable performance, long durable work life (as long as five years), noticeably higher print quality, especially with very small infant wrist band bar codes, ease of use and quiet operation. Lower maintenance cost was another critical factor because these printers must support unrelenting around-the-clock hospital operations.

A Solid Partnership: Working Together To Bring Improved Healthcare Printing Solution

Royce Digital and Printronix have a relationship that spans 18 years. “We prefer Printronix because their products are well engineered, durable and are very robust to withstand the demands of healthcare applications ,” said Anthony Chiodini, vice president at Royce Digital Systems. “Our client appreciates the fact they have a printer that does not require much attention and support. The improved networking capabilities of Printronix over the other brands that were considered without question enables better printer management and support. The T4M interprets multiple data streams, making a simple migration path for our client to standardize their operation on a single model printer. Together we have made real improvement in asset utilization by pre-installing all varieties of patient wristbands into a single printer. It has been noted that other printers require approximately 30 percent more support than the Printronix T4M. The staff depends on the printers to run even after hours when there is limited IT support.”
