USPS Intelligent Mail Bar Code Initiative

Snail mail still exists, and the United States Postal Service doesn’t want you to forget it! Starting in May 2009, the USPS Intelligent Mail® bar code initiative will take effect. All bulk mail will be required to have this new bar code for tracking and sorting of letters and flats.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has mandated that by May 2009 all bulk mail will use the intelligent Mail® bar code. The Intelligent Mail bar code (formally known as the 4-State Customer Barcode) is the next generation of USPS bar code technology used to sort and track letters and flats. The Intelligent Mail bar code combines the data of the existing POSTNET™ and the PLANET Code® bar codes, as well as other data, into one unique bar code. The Intelligent Mail bar code is a type of height-modulated bar code that uses four distinct vertical bar types: Full, Tracker, Ascender and Descender.

Printronix will support the Intelligent Mail bar code on four product lines: P7000 line-matrix, T5000r thermal bar code, T4M RFID-ready thermal bar code and L7032 laser printers. The full manufacturing release will occur in fall 2008 for all the supported product lines. P7000 series customers who would like to adopt this bar code now can order a point release of the firmware to enable their printers using part number 369224, version 2.13D.
